Choosing the Right Class

Do I need previous Tai Chi experience? No. Our beginner classes are designed for people with little or no Tai Chi experience. Movements are introduced gradually through demonstration, practice, and repetition, allowing students to learn at a comfortable pace.

What is the difference between Beginner’s Tai Chi and Tai Chi Continuation? Beginner’s Tai Chi is for new students and introduces the basic movements and principles of Yang-style Tai Chi. Continuation classes are for students who have completed two or more beginner sessions or have comparable Tai Chi experience.

Do I need to be athletic or flexible? No. You do not need to be athletic or especially flexible. However, students should be able to participate safely in a standing group exercise class and follow the instructor’s movements.

Is Tai Chi appropriate for older adults? Yes. We welcome adults of many ages, and age alone does not determine whether someone will be comfortable in our classes. Balance, stamina, mobility, and the ability to follow group instruction are more important than a person’s age.

May I observe a class before registering? Yes. Prospective students are welcome to observe a class and see the teaching style, pace, and physical requirements. Please contact us in advance so we can recommend the best class for you to visit.

Attendance and Progress

Physical Requirements

What should I expect physically during class? Classes include approximately 45 to 60 minutes of standing and gentle movement. Students should be comfortable remaining on their feet, shifting their weight, and moving independently for most of the class. Short breaks may be taken when needed.

What if I have limited balance, mobility, or endurance? Please contact us before registering. Our regular classes move at a group pace and are not designed as chair-supported or individually assisted programs. Someone who needs frequent seated breaks, close assistance, or a much slower pace may feel more comfortable in a senior center or specialized adaptive Tai Chi class.

Preparing for Class

What should I wear to class? Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Exercise clothes are fine, but special Tai Chi clothing is not required. Dressing in light layers can help you remain comfortable as you warm up.

What type of footwear should I wear? Wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes that provide stability and allow you to move easily. Athletic shoes are acceptable. Please avoid sandals, open-toed shoes, high heels, or footwear with heavy platforms.

Where are classes held? Classes are held at two Andover locations: South Church and Andover Fit Body Boot Camp. Please check the class schedule carefully when registering to confirm the location of your class.

Will I fall behind if I miss a class? Our classes include regular review and repetition, so missing an occasional class should not prevent you from continuing. If you expect to miss several classes, please speak with the instructor about the best way to stay on track.

How quickly will I learn Tai Chi? Everyone learns at a different pace. Tai Chi is not about rushing or competing with others. Regular attendance and practice will help you become more comfortable with the movements over time.

Can I join after a session has started? Depending on available space and how far the class has progressed, it may be possible to join after the session begins. Please contact us to discuss the best option.
