Self Defense

What is Kung Fu?

Kung Fu is a martial art which originated in China over 5,000 years ago. The term "kung fu" is a generic term that describes many styles of martial arts practiced in China. When one translates Kung Fu, it means time and energy that is put into an art for self-improvement.

What is the difference between Kung Fu, Karate & Tae Kwon Do?

Kung Fu, Karate, and Tae Kwon Do all fit under the umbrella of "martial arts". The primary difference between them is where they each originated. Kung Fu, as mentioned above, originated in China. Karate is from Japan and Tae Kwon Do is from Korea, both with origins that trace back to China. Kung Fu is the oldest of the three. In the 1950's, many westerners were being introduced to Karate and it soon became a household name synonymous with the generic term "martial arts". Karate became more well-known in the United States due to it's early start in this country. It was not until the 1970's that westerners became introduced to Kung Fu through Hollywood, namely Bruce Lee.

Will my child be able to use Kung Fu for self defense?

As with most martial arts, beginners are introduced to the basics of Kung Fu which become the building blocks to more complicated and applicable self defense techniques. Consider the basics like the alphabet. One must learn the ABC's, then words, then sentences and finally paragraphs. Students are taught at their first lesson that Kung Fu should only be used for self-defense and only as a last resort. Our philosophy is to not only strengthen the student's bodies but to also strengthen their minds by teaching them to be street-wise and confident. Self-defense techniques can be practiced in many different ways: solo; with a partner; with equipment; and in the intermediate and advanced stages, sparring with protective equipment becomes an option.

How long has the organization been in existence?

Dr. Yang founded Yang's Martial Arts Association (YMAA) in 1982. The Andover branch of YMAA was opened by Mr. Kiesel in 1988. The goal of Yang's, as set forth by Dr. Yang (see Dr. Yang's bio in the About The Staff section) and carried out by Mr. Kiesel, is to educate the Merrimack Valley community about traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

What are some of the benefits of Kung Fu?

Yang's Kung Fu program is designed for children to develop self-discipline, self confidence, focus, and goal setting. Our instructors work closely with your child to monitor his or her progress in these areas. There are many benefits of Kung Fu. One benefit is improved performance in school. Parents have seen improved school grades as a direct result from increased self-esteem, improved motivation, and self direction.

What is the goal of the Kung Fu program?

It is important for each student to learn to set short-term, intermediate and long range goals. At Yang's, every students' goal is to become a Black Belt and continue "Black Belt Excellence". Black Belt is a symbol of excellence not only in the martial arts, but also in one's self. It is an important tool to be used by instructors and parents for developing desire, perseverance, and for teaching the importance of following through in any activity.
